The Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Hotel Le Saint-Paul in Nice

Dear Members and Friends,

Happy New Year 2022! Sanitary conditions permitting, the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the American Club of the Riviera will take place on January 22, 2022 at Le Saint-Paul Hotel, 29, Bd Franck Pilatte, 06300 Nice. 

The AGM will begin at 12:00 noon (please see Notice of Meeting). 

Following the AGM, we will enjoy a 3-course lunch including beverages.


Kindly confirm your place as soon as possible, but no later than Monday, January 17, 2022.  In the event restrictions are put in place by the French government, members and guests will be reimbursed, and the meeting will be held virtually.

The Saint Paul Hotel, in the Lazaret district of Nice, was formerly known as the “Maison du Séminaire”. Built in 1840 as a seminary for training priests it became le Saint Paul Hotel-Restaurant in 2012, and has recently undergone a complete renovation.  A beautiful chapel we will visit in small groups, still exists on the premises.

    🦃🍁 Invitation to our Thanksgiving luncheon at the Hotel Hermitage in Monte-Carlo 🥂🥧

    Dear Members and Friends,

    We are very pleased to announce that the American Club of the Riviera will once again host its traditional Thanksgiving luncheon at the Hotel Hermitage in Monte-Carlo.  We all missed getting together last year and hope that the current trend of “getting back to normal” continues.  We will, of course, continue to observe all required sanitary measures in force at the time.

    The venue will be the splendid Salle Belle Epoque at the Hotel Hermitage, with a champagne reception beginning at 12:30 pm, followed by a traditional American feast of turkey and all the trimmings. 

    This year, we expect to have honored guests from the US Navy and the US Army as well as other distinguished guests.

    Price per person:

    €120 for members of the American Club and their immediate families

    €140 for non-members.

    This price includes the festive champagne reception, complete Thanksgiving meal and all beverages (wine or juice, mineral water and coffee or tea).

    Gastronomic lunch at Jacques Chibois at La Bastide Saint-Antoine

    Dear Members,

    Back in March 2020, we had planned a festive lunch at Jacques Chibois’ one-star restaurant in Grasse. It was then that the Coronavirus put a stop to all our ACR activities until July of this year.

    We decided recently to contact the Sales & Marketing Manager of La Bastide Saint-Antoine and she agreed to welcome us this year at the same financial conditions as in 2020.

    We will thus hold our lunch there on 28 October in a private room, with a terrace overlooking the bay of Cannes and the surrounding mountains, where we will enjoy a glass of champagne before sitting down for lunch.

    Please plan to arrive at La Bastide at 12:30. If you arrive earlier, you will be able to stroll in the surrounding garden, which expands over a surface of some 5 hectares.

    After the champagne, we will be served a three-course gourmet meal. As a favor to our Club, Executive Chef Laurent Barberot has accepted to give us a choice of two different main courses. The menu will thus consist of:

    First course

    Small ravioli stuffed with mushrooms and foie gras, dry porcini sauce and chestnut chips

    Main course

    For the main course, you will have a choice between:

    Young turbot with artichokes barigoule style, served with an artichoke-leaf sauce

    or

    Beef and its Swiss chard cannelloni in a parmesan cream and glazed baby onions

    Dessert

    Egg and mascarpone citrus cream, tiramisu style, on a lime Madeleine biscuit

    Euros 80 for American Club members
    Euros 90 for guests of American Club members.

    Annual Gala Dinner-Dance Hotel Negresco in Nice

    After a year of absence, our annual Gala Dinner-Dance is back, this time at the world-famous Hotel Negresco in Nice. The Negresco first opened in 1913 and immediately drew the attention of the international Jet Set.

    It was purchased in 1957 by Madame Jeanne Augier, who continued the incredible story of the Palace. She personally greeted celebrities (Salvador Dali, Princess Grace of Monaco, the Beatles, Louis Armstrong, Elton John, to name but a few) and started a collection of valuable artwork and furniture.

    The flamboyant Madame Augier died in January 2019, in her 96th year, but the Negresco continues to live in splendor, with some 6000 works of art amassed over the years by this great collector. Some of you had the opportunity to view several of them in November 2017, just before our ACR Thanksgiving lunch, held that year in the Negresco’s Salon Masséna.

    This is exactly where we will hold our annual Gala Dinner-Dance this year. As you know, this is one of our most popular events and it welcomes members and non-members of the Club. However, because of the Covid restrictions, we have limited our capacity to 80 participants. So, if you are planning to attend, don’t wait before registering.

    Since 2018, a woman Chef by the name of Virginie Basselot is in charge of the one-star restaurant Le Chantecler and of the banquets. Virginie has received many awards in her career and, in 2015, she became Meilleur Ouvrier de France (MOF). At the beginning of this month, she was recognized for her technical excellence by the famous Gault & Millau guide.

    On the day of our Gala, please plan to arrive at the Negresco by 19:30 and head towards the Galerie Masséna in order to register yourself with one of our Governors. Once registered, you will be offered a glass of champagne and will be able to meet and chat with our other guests.

    After the aperitif, we will move next door to Salon Masséna, where we will be served the following gourmet menu, prepared under the supervision of Virginie Basselot.

    Dinner Menu:

    Pressed duck foie gras, dried fruit condiment and warm brioche

    Savory lamb confit, cereal biscuit and seasoned beets

    Pavlova with fresh fruits

    Price:

    • Euros 115 per person for American Club members.
      (
      If you have joined as a Couple please select the "Couple Member" ticket and add 2nd member as a guest).
    • Euros 130 for non-members. Guests are welcome at the non-member price.

    The above prices are inclusive of aperitif, 3-course dinner, mineral water, one-half bottle of wine per person, coffee, petits fours and DJ.

    I am sure that many of you, after a long break, are looking forward to dancing the night away and swaying to the rhythm of our DJ Michael Widdop, who was part of our team at our 5th of July event.

    Dress code: Black-tie or dark suit for gentlemen and long or short cocktail dress for ladies.

    Accommodation: The Negresco has already informed me that it is almost fully booked for the weekend of our event. Their Banquet Manager, Marion Leblond (no relation to myself), expects to have a few rooms available at a preferential rate to our guests, with a minimum stay of 2 nights.     The Negresco is within walking distance to a number of other hotels with plenty of alternative accommodations, should you decide to stay overnight in Nice.

    Annual Cannes Pyrotechnic Art Festival and Dinner at the Croisette Beach Restaurant

    When: Tuesday, 24th August, 2021

    Location: Croisette Beach Restaurant, Bd de la Croisette, 06400 Cannes

    After an absence of one year, the Cannes Fireworks Festival has come back in 2021, this time with all pyrotechnicians based in France, because of the pandemic. The show on 24 August is the last one of the year and its theme is a “Tribute to Sean Connery”.

    Sean Connery was the first interpreter of James Bond, the most famous British secret agent, but during his career of 39 years, he shot more than 75 movies under the direction of the greatest filmmakers of our time. He died of old age on 31 October 2020; he was 90 years old.

    The show will retrace the cinematographic adventure of Sir Sean Connery, to the sound of the eleven official soundtracks of the movies that earned him the highest distinctions.     Event venue: As in 2019, at our previous Fireworks dinner, we will meet at the Croisette Beach restaurant, located just in front of the Miramar bus stop, at 8 PM (20:00). We have reserved tables on the terrace. To increase our chances of meeting the sanitary requirements in effect on that day, we have asked for tables of 6 maximum.

    Dinner Menu:

    Upon your arrival at the restaurant, you will be guided to your table, where a glass of prosecco will be offered. Please note that all the persons having dinner at the Croisette Beach that day will be served a unique menu consisting of:

    Le crabe en tartare et combawa (Tartare of crab with combawa)

    Le maigre, en pavé rôti au thym, beurre citronné et tian de légumes provençaux (Roasted meager fish with thyme, lemon butter and tian of provençal vegetables)

    Le macaron à la pêche et chocolat noir (Peach macaroon and dark chocolate)

    To accompany this menu, we have ordered a half bottle of wine per person (white, rosé or white), mineral water and coffee.

    Price:

    • Euros 105 for 2021 American Club members
    • Euros 115 for all others

    Important information:

    After our Zoom meeting of 28th July, the ACR Board of Governors decided to limit our attendance to this event to only fifty (50) individuals. As a result, we will give priority to our 2021 paid ACR members until the 16th of August. From the 17th of August, those same members will be allowed to register one or two guests (one per member).

    Covid / Sanitary measures:

    As from the 9th of August, all restaurants in France must require their clients to present a valid health pass (pass sanitaire in French) in order to gain access to the restaurant. Is currently considered a valid health pass:

    • a certificate of vaccination against Covid-19 testifying of a complete dosing; or
    • a negative PCR or antigenic test taken less than 48 hours before coming to the restaurant; or
    • a certificate of recovery from Covid-19 at least 11 days old but less than 6 months old.

    The above requirements for the definition of a valid health pass could be modified again. Please be sure to comply with the requirements in effect at the time of this event.

    Subject to further evolution or any changes in the current regulations, the Croisette Beach restaurant requires all guests to wear a mask in the restaurant at all times, except when seated for dinner.

    While restaurant personnel cannot verify your identity, we do ask that you please bring a proof of identity in case of any controls before, during or after the event.

    Wine Tasting at Hotel Le Saint-Paul in Nice

    When: Friday, 13th August, 2021

    Location: Hotel Le Saint-Paul, 29 boulevard Franck Pilatte, 06300 Nice (near Port area for ferries to Corsica)


    Join us for a wine tasting and luncheon with the prestigious master sommelier, Anthony Taylor, of Maison Gabriel Meffre in Gigondas. His theme for our event will be “A Discovery of the famous ‘Crus’ of the Rhone Valley”. We will have the opportunity to taste six wines from some of the finest appellations (Condrieu, Gigondas, Châteauneuf du Pape and Côte Rôtie) of this historical wine region – two white and four red.

    The wine tasting will start at 11am and will be followed by a luncheon at 1pm, during which Anthony will introduce us to a few delicious, easy-drinking wines, including two from Gabriel Meffre’s Chateau Grand Escalion estate near Nimes.

    Luncheon Menu:

    • Gravlax de Saumon, Crème Yaourt et Soja, Salade Fraicheur
    • Suprême de Volaille, Royale de Pommes de Terre, Sauce aux Champignons
    • Mi-Cuit au Chocolat et Boule de Glace
    Parking: Le Saint Paul, where the ACR has held annual meetings, has ample parking space. (Entrance to parking is across from La Réserve).

    Important: This event is reserved for ACR members who have paid their 2021 membership dues. As we can accommodate only 40 people, please register as soon as possible.

    Our ACR Secretary and Legal Advisor, Sandra van Essche, is the Event Manager for this event. She is a childhood friend of Anthony Taylor and it is thanks to her that he has proposed to do a wine tasting for the American Club of the Riviera.

    Covid/ Sanitary Measures: Since March 2020, sanitary measures have been put in place in accordance with French government regulations.  The Hotel Saint-Paul requires strict adherence to the measures. Subject to further evolution or any changes in the current regulations, the hotel requires all guests to wear a mask in the hotel at all times (except when seated for the tasting and lunch).

    As of August 1, 2021, a ‘Sanitary Pass’ will be required to enter a restaurant in France.  Please be sure to comply with the requirements in effect at the time of this event.  In the unfortunate case that we are forced to cancel the event, full reimbursement will be made to those who will have paid.
