Saturday 8th December- A Taste of Nice Christmas Special followed by Leonard Bernstein’s “Wonderful Town” at Opéra de Nice

Dear Members and Friends,

This invitation includes two very different events – all on the same day.

Our first activity starts with a guided gourmet walking tour to savor the unique flavors of Nice. On this tour, you get to taste your way through local specialties and wine. You will not only get a feel for the flavor of Niçois cuisine, but also the unique history, culture and heritage of Nice. The tour will be peppered with stories and anecdotes, some with a specific American connection. The tour will be informative and fun and show you the secrets of Nice you wouldn’t otherwise have found on your own. This tour is tailor made for The American Club of the Riviera in English, by local guides.

Whether you are a real foodie, photographer, history lover, blogger or just want to have fun, this event will be something out of the ordinary. Not to be missed!

During the tour we will sample:

  • Swiss chard in a way you’d never imagine it
  • Sickly sweet candied fruit
  • The humble side of Riviera wine
  • Socca, the only true Niçois fast food
  • Les Petits Farcis – literally “the little stuffed ones”
  • Pissaladière – there is no such thing as too much onion!
  • The health benefits of Mediterranean cuisine
  • The treize desserts de Noël
  • Various surprises…

We will sit down for lunch that includes ⅓ bottle of good quality AOC rosé or red wine, water and coffee. The tour does not end after lunch so on your feet again.

Leonard Bernstein
“Wonderful Town” musical
On the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Leonard Bernstein
Opéra de Nice – at 4 pm

Broadway, 1953, Wonderful Town is arguably Leonard Bernstein’s most famous musical with West Side Story. Wonderful Town is written by Joseph A. Fields and Jerome Chodorov, lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, and music by Leonard Bernstein. The musical tells the story of two sisters who aspire to be a writer and actress respectively, seeking success from their basement apartment in New York City’s Greenwich Village. It is based on Fields and Chodorov’s 1940 play My Sister Eileen, which in turn originated from autobiographical short stories by Ruth McKenney first published in The New Yorker in the late 1930s and later published in book form as My Sister Eileen.
